His father escaped forced labor camps twice under Nazi Hungary and twice more under communism
His father escaped forced labor camps twice under Nazi Hungary and twice more under communism. Once, he missed his train by going to the wrong station, and everyone who caught the right one was arrested. He went on to deliver 10,000 babies in Detroit with a big smile on his face.
Devon Wieters sits down with Rob Wolf, MD, a retired neuroradiologist from Detroit and author of the award-winning book Not a Real Enemy: The True Story of a Hungarian Jewish Man's Fight for Freedom. Rob's parents wrote down his father's story in the 1970s. Years after they died, a historian friend handed Rob the disk it was saved on. He read it the way a radiologist reads a scan, with his dad's autobiography on one side and his own draft on the other, and turned it into a biography, an adventure, and a history of Hungary from the end of World War I to the 1956 Hungarian Revolution.
Rob and Devon talk about the parents his father lost at Auschwitz, why only about 5% of the forced laborers in his area survived, and the team that helped bring the book to life. Rob also explains why he now spends nearly all of his time fighting antisemitism through education, starting at home. To finish, they pick a dream cast for the movie version.
